Hester is concerned that as Chillingworth gets closer to the minister, the minister's health is deteriorating and Chillingworth appearance seems more and more deformed and sinister. She is afraid for Dimmesdale and what Chillingworth is doing to him. Thus Hester makes a decision to confront Chillingworth to tell him she is going to break her promise not to reveal his identity to anyone. She tells Chillingworth that she is going to tell Dimmesdale that the doctor is/was her husband. Chillingworth claims he is helping Dimmesdale and keeping him alive but Hester is still determined to warn the minister about the doctor's true identity. This sets up an important scene in the forest between Hester and Dimmesdale.
