What's clear from the discussion of Carew's murder is that evil cuts across class lines. In many cases a maid would not be listened to, but in the murder of a high class person like Carew, she is. That's one observation about evil from that section. Another is that Stevenson shows how evil is linked to the biological/the animalistic, and with transgressing social boundaries. To be specific, he writes the following: "The old gentleman took a step back with the air of one very much surprised and a trifle hurt; and at that Mr. Hyde broke out of all bounds and clubbed him to the earth. And next moment, with ape-like fury, he was trampling his victim under foot and hailing down a storm of blows, under which the bones were audibly shattered and the body jumped upon the roadway. At the horror of these sights and sounds, the maid fainted." The "ape-like" is a key phrase. This evil comes from man's animal nature. Posted by gbeatty on Aug 29, 2008. |
